Thales Systems Canada Inc. (Thales Systems) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a contract by Supply and Services Canada on behalf of the Department of National Defence to conduct an engineering assessment of Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) systems for application to Search And Rescue (SAR) operations. The work, being performed for the Directorate of Avionics, Simulators, and Photography at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, will baseline current capabilities and examine the environmental factors and typical search scenarios.

The project will identify improvements in SAR capabilities as a result of using FLIR systems and, during the course of the work, a SAR FLIR system requirement specification will be developed. In addition, a survey of existing and future technology will be conducted to develop a short list of suitable FLIR systems, and a prototyping plan will be developed for laboratory evaluation and aircraft flight trials.
